Teddy Bear Mania!

This month is all about BEARS and we are beary excited!  wink, wink...

Your child is welcome to bring  (and leave for the month) a teddy bear.  We'll be singing to our bears, sorting our bears by varying attributes, reading to our bears,& writing with them!            If you don't want to spend TONS of $ on a bear, head to the local thrift store.  

They have a HUGE variety for a few bucks out of your pocket.

Don't forget~~

 we have invited you into the classroom next Thursday for our Valentine concert and help in reading our cards. 

Please come at 2:30pm!

Go Seahawks!

Our room can hardly wait to cheer on our Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon!  

The amount of spirit and enthusiasm is contagious.  

Today, we had all wore our Seahawk colors to prepare for the BIG GAME!

I am sure your child will be using his/her decorations on Sunday afternoon and cheering them on...

Decoding Words

When I look  through current assessments and performance tasks, I notice the one area we need more practice with is DECODING WORDS! What is that?  Basically, it is the process your child goes through to sound out (break apart the word by sounds to read).

All of the kids are fluent in reading letters, hearing first sounds in words, and even breaking apart words by sound (encoding) without looking at text.  However, the one area EVERYONE could use more practice with is decoding words.

In the classroom, we say, "Bump it.  Smooth it. Say it."  When your child comes to text that he/she does not read by sight, he she goes through the decoding process...bump it__smooth it__say it.

I encourage you to practice this skill when their Jog Around packet that comes home 

*(3 pages that work on reading fluency).     Eventually, I'd like the kids to drop the "bump it" and just smooth/say the word.

says /ch/ like in Chase.

says /ph/ like in phone.

says /oo/ like in boo.

says /oy/ like in ahoy.

ING

says /ing/ like in sing.

OW

 says /ow/ like in cow.

As your child is reading and writing, it is important you help me remember what these letters say when they are "buddies."
